Hehe, thanks! I was quite surprised no one ever made that connection with nu and nude while going through the pages of the nu metal tag shoutbox.

Nu metal gets too much hate cause it's associated with bands like Limp Bizkit. If you look hard enough you might find some really good songs and bands in this genre.

Nu Metal was the gateway for practically all of us who grew up in the 90s. Some of it has aged well, most of it has not.

Uhm, not really. I was born in 1983, and my gateways were "Appetite for Destruction" (Guns N' Roses) and "Master of Puppets" (Metallica). Those were my very first CDs, purchased with my first two allowances at the age of 6! That was in 1990. I didn't notice nu metal until I saw the music video for "Break Stuff" (Limp Bizkit) on TV – almost a decade later. But then again, I'm aware of the fact that you don't typically listen to thrash metal as a 6-year-old.

Actually only hated by 40 year olds fat mans, edgy adolescents who think they are "true metalheads" and hipsters.

I prefer "true metal" but still like nu metal. it's mainly angry groove metal mixed with rap. It may not be "true metal" as its different.

At the same time people think nu metal, metalcore/deathcore or whatever trend is considered "metal" that doesn't explore the rest of the metal styles out there. Yea, metalheads could be less hateful towards the "next trends" such as Babymetal, Spiritbox (haven't listened to them yet) but then there is a few people going around calling Sleep Token metal, even though there is very little to consider them metal. Few screams here and there.. a few djent/progressive metal in the background doesn't make them a metal band.

Yeah, didn't think of the grunge elements as I don't listen to it much but I agree with that.

Yeah, I would even say that all the hate was perfectly understandable back in the 90s. Music deviated too much from the 'averaged' metal canon, not to mention totally alien in fashion and background (Korn were never really affilated with neither hardcore nor metal scenes as such). And suddenly nu metal became extremely popular, crowding out 'true metal' from the attention of the younger audience. That was annoying. But that was twenty years ago...

To me, as a kid from the 90's and early 00's, nu metal, grunge and other adjacent genres sounded very 'modern' and unusual against the backdrop of older rock music. As if Queen, Guns 'n' Roses, Aerosmith, etc represented the music of a truly bygone era (even if it was only 10-20 years ago). Of course, now I know that nu metal and grunge had deep roots in the 80s, and this difference in perception is due to the fact that blues-based rock was popular for a long time, while the alternative rock and industrial rock scenes suddenly jumped ahead much later. And it becomes even more blurry when you consider the history of synthpop and EDM, drum-and-bass and so on. Still, it was quite unique time for kids inexperienced in music, as if experiencing a fracture between two different eras: older 'dad rock' times and new futuristic era with gloomier sounds and cyberpunk vibes of Fear Factory, Rammstein, Korn, etc. Have there ever been such drastic changes in mainstream (rock) aesthetics? Not sure.

Maybe, Slayer is a bigger influence on Slipknot IMO as Slayer had done an aggressive style of thrash. Exodus " Exhibit B: The Human Condition" and Kreator "Phantom Antichrist" albums has amplified the thrash metal style which while doesn't sound like Slipknot obviously but the band did do something with it. Still Slipknot isn't really thrash or death metal. I don't know what bands would have influenced the death metal portion other than maybe Cannibal Corpse.

A good bunch of the members of Slipknot especially Mick And Joey have a big Black/Death Metal influence! So it does make sense why a bunch of their songs have huge death-metal influence. But i totally agree Slipknot isn't death-metal but I wouldn't call them nu-metal either sure Self tilted could be classified as nu-metal! but every other album they've made except Self tilted in my opinion have little to no nu-metal in it!

@masklul yeah the only thing Slipknot uses is turntables. It's difficult to put Slipknot in a certain genre because of that. I only heard of them being influenced by Venom but it's always interesting what artists the bands listen to.

I am by no means death metal expert and might be biased towards Slipknot, but I never had the same level of emotional attachment to any death metal album, as I have to IOWA. Also, I get easily bored by death metal, but maybe you have some interesting recommendations?
Aktionen

spineshank155
@UtopiaOfBastard Ah, well I guess since Slipknot isn't really death metal they use a variety of styles they might be more interesting than straight death metal well you can try Anaal Nathrakh they're more of a black/death industrial style, I'd go for their "..Black Widow" album first then go to more recent direction. Another is Behemoth, black/death metal. Then check out Arch Enemy, Angela era, which is more melodic death than just straight death metal. After all that you could check out Brain Drill, The Forsaken, Blood Red Throne, Nile, Cryptopsy (though they're still pretty generic especially their first 2 albums), Deicide and Origin. Let me know which ones you liked, if any 😄

Most likely immaturity. I for awhile was once like that but it's pointless and you don't make as many friends that way to well introduce what you like so.. yeah its actually kind of silly really.

I think this is because many have got annoyed by media mentioning nu metal simply as metal in general, thereby downplaying older established sub-genres, and stuff like that. Notice that metalheads are generally ok at least with 90s metalcore and industrial metal, which are adjacent to groove/nu metal thing. Kinda immature on the one hand, but pretty understandable on the other.

It was mostly due to the fact it was the only mainstream substyle of metal that was getting a lot of attention. That and much of it was just angst, anger and whiny (Korn was one of them) oh then you got Limp Bizkit 🤣. Anyhow it's better to enjoy what you like and ignore the rest. I do miss the days of going to the mall in my teens to check out the latest in metal even though it was only just nu metal. Eventually I discovered metal core then death metal, black metal, folk metal, grindcore, ect. LastFM, Myspace and YouTube are excellent ways of discovering new styles.
