the narrative that "female fronted" is offensive or misogynistic is one of the most deranged narratives I see pushed in the metal community

It is at the very least confusing and inaccurate and thus can be taken as offensive when put into the context of its use in rock music. The issue stems largely with the use of "fronted". First: I would say the front person of a band is actually the primary driver and can be anyone. Delain for example is formed by Martijn Westerholt and he is keyboardist and main songwriter. Second: If you ask an average person what metal is known for; thick heavy guitar solos would probably be the answer you get. Thus, the guitar is assumed to often be the "front" and centre of the band unlike in pop music which is generally about the singer. So, are you saying these bands have female guitarists or implying they are vocal-focused and thus not as heavy? Third: Putting all that aside, if it is about the uniqueness of female vocals in metal bands which are by assumption, male-dominated, would a band like "Amaranthine" be mixed-fronted metal since it has two male singers and one female?

The tag isn't offensive, you're just stupid, metal is mostly men (so "male fronted" is redundant because everyone assumes this already) so a tag that distinguishes female vocalists makes perfect sense and has a valid use case, men and women sound different didn't you know?
Aktionen

That isn't even what I said. "Fronted" isn't the same as vocalist you know that right? Why not use "[subgenre] metal with female vocalists" instead? Rock is also "make-dominated" but don't see that as a tag for rock music, do you? It also doesn't add any value when the tag is just 90% symphonic metal bands which IS dominated by female vocalist.

I can see why some people get offended by this tag but I don't think they should view it in such a one-dimensional way. I can't imagine how many female-fronted bands I've found because of tags like this throughout the years. For someone who prefers female vocals (like me), this tag has been a great help. Anyone with half a brain knows it's all metal anyway. This just helps out with pointing out the few females in an ocean of male singers.

For me, I find that it is not even accurate as singers are often far from being the front person in metal music as it is often the guitarist or keyboardist. It' just feels like the diversity quota hire tag with its only value being convenience. "(sub-genre) metal with female singers / feminine vocals" is a far more accurate and less offensive tag. It's still not completely inclusive but a far better starting point.

It's not necessarily about being used in bands promos and such, though. Take a modern band like Lacuna Coil for instance. They've got a name not tied to a specific person, they're clearly a band and they've got both male and female vocals. Yet the one face outwards of that band is Cristina Scabbia. She does the interviews, she's always been on the mag covers and she's effectively fronting the band live. The same thing can be said about Arch Enemy, Evanescence and even Within Temptation. The fact is that a woman is often/usually the focal point of the mentioned examples. How is it wrong to call it female-fronted then? That applies even further to the namesake bands, obviously. As far pop music and artists go, a logical explanation could be that the gender ratio between pop and metal is as wide as it is. Listen to some pop radio and count how many female contra male singers they play, then do the same with a metal station. Women aren't a minority in pop music as they are in metal.

Serious? You bring up the gender ratio a lot for someone who says it's not a diversity tag. NO ONE IS SAYING THERE AREN'T FEMALE FRONTED BANDS. I'm saying it's not accurate or appropriate in a lot of cases. Is Diablo Swing Orchestra female-fronted? What about Nightwish? Some vocalists/bands have come out and say they don't like the tag. Others have female vocalists but aren't female-fronted. You also conveniently skipped over rock music which are ALSO dominated by men. Cristina Scabbia is basically an original member of Lacuna Coil as she joined before the name change/first album. Reporters also often get some choice to who they wish to interview. Is The Mario Movie fronted by Jack Black who played Browser because he did more media interviews?

After almost 10 years I tired of music like this. Same shit over and over again. It's cool when you're 16 y.o. but then becomes reparative. Especially when 40 y.o. women try to be 20 y.o. true gothic girl. It's just ridiculous. Go invest your money for retirement, you grandma but don't sing metal.

Women are rarer than men in most metal genres. This is a useful tag to find female vocals, which obviously sound different than a man's.

You can get more specific, though. Female-fronted symphonic metal, female-fronted stoner doom, female-fronted alternative metal, etc. When I was first getting into female-fronted metal in the mid-2000s or so, yeah, female vocalists in metal were pretty rare, and they were usually only present in symphonic metal and gothic metal. But that's changed a lot in recent years. The label is not anywhere near as small as it used to be, and it's becoming diverse enough that it's not a particularly useful tag on its own.

No, he is right. If the implication is that it is to help find female metal vocalists in a male dominated industry, I would just use "(sub-genre) metal with female [lead] singers / feminine vocals" in that case. That is at least accurate. There is an implied assumption with the use of the word "fronted" which makes no sense in the context of metal as it is often about the guitar. In reality the front person is the driver of the band and often a founder and songwriter and can play any instrument. I thought it was an odd tag and about bands with female guitarists or female songwriters of metal at first or something.

This is the issue I have with a big part of the fanbase of bands such as Arch Enemy, Kobra and the Lotus, etc who don't really sound that special (to me at least). Yet the popular opinion is that it's harder for women to get big in metal... I think it's quite the opposite.

I agree. Ideally the site would let users combine multiple tags in searches, so it would be possible to search for artists tagged with any genre(s) plus a tag like "female vocalist" or "female lead vocals," which would make this tag and any other combination unnecessary. But that's an issue I've had with this site for 17 years now, and the prospects for improvement were dim even before it went downhill. I don't really even use Last.fm tags to find music anymore. I've been mainly relying on other people's Spotify playlists for the past decade. One easy change they could make would be to let users blacklist tags like this to hide them, so that more helpful tags appear instead when they look at an artist page.

This situation is somewhat comparable to an election where only two candidates have a realistic chance of winning - "female fronted" has been a term used by the industry for what, half a century or more? So it's deeply ingrained, and for fans of a band who want to help boost its exposure, it's probably optimal to use this tag due to its popularity, even if they don't like it. In some cases grassroots efforts do end up changing community attitudes, but I've also seen an authoritarian approach where websites auto-replace a term. That's a powerful shortcut, though people are obviously resistant and rebellious when that happens, and I don't know how effective that can be at actually changing the way people think over the long term. (This is becoming quite Orwellian :P)

Never quite considered" female fronted metal" an actual music genre but a useless tag being slapped on various bands that just so happendens to have a female member ( some times not the singer) but they get labeled as female fronted anyway. A lot of these bands are thrown into the symphonic/ gothic/ power metal genre even though they play a completely different style

I have listened to may different genres of music in my 27 years on this earth, ranging from 18th century classical to vaporwave, and I really do think female-fronted metal is quite possibly the worst thing ever to happen to music (i.e. all the bands in the top 8 above and bands like them, excluding Arch Enemy). On the other band, another breed of female fronted metal - kawaii metal - I think is one of the greatest things to ever happen to music. Death to all this female fronted gothic/symphonic/power bullshit and LONG LIVE KAWAII METAL!!!

So I accidentally clicked the link and it sounded awesome together with Silent Scream's "Sinking" for the 1 minute and 20 seconds it was on xD. And I'm getting fucking sick of people saying it's just "tits in corsets", because it isn't! A woman's voice in metal is to many people amazing and people should just shut up, there's a knife over there, cut up that hate into tiny little happy snowflakes.

Then use something like "(sub-genre) metal with female [lead] singers / feminine vocals" in that case. That is at least accurate. There is an implied assumption with the use of the word "fronted" which makes no sense in the context of metal as it is often about the guitar or the front person/driver of the band who is often a founder and songwriter and can play any instrument.
