South West Four Interview: Skream

Nie chcesz oglądać reklam? Ulepsz teraz

It's a little over a week away until south London's Clapham Common is taken over with some of the best DJs and producers in the planet for the latest edition of South West Four. With excitement building amongst the dance and electronic communities, we fired some quick questions over to one of the dubstep originators, Skream, who performs on the festival's second and final day.

Listen to Skream's debut Skream! here.

Skream fans on your Last.fm page are saying how its a sad thing that you've 'left' the dubstep scene. What would you respond to those people with?

The music is still there for the dubstep fans to enjoy . I've moved on and discovered a new world that interests me and inspires me a lot – everyone knows dusbtep is a massive part of my career to date but I'm just doing my thing and enjoying another world and they are more than welcome to come join me on. The music is still there for the dubstep fans to enjoy...

Does being from Croydon still have any reflection on your creative output?

Of course it does – Croydon is the best place on earth!

Do you feel you've somewhat 'paid your dues' now, and have the freedom to, creatively at least, do whatever you please?

I've always just done what I please anyway.

Obviously you have a long running relationship with Benga - who else have been the highlights to collaborate with in your career so far?

So many highlights over the years that I could be here for a week telling you about them - and some of the back stories to go with them. But I think most are pretty well documented anyway.

There's so many ways to discover music now - do you passively discover music or is it something you seek out on a regular basis?

There's a bit of both worlds there – I'm lucky enough that I get sent so much music from across the board which is great – with the radio show I like to keep on top and use the show / my name to push as many new producers and music as possible. However I do still like to have a shop around and discover music for myself though - I have to! For me there are so many 4/4 artists that may have been around for years that I am constantly just discovering personally that the inspiration from new and old-new-to-me talent is fantastic

Tell us your top 3 acts to look out for on the SW4 lineup and what excites you about them

Laurent Garnier - I played with him recently and since then I have been searching out his productions from over the years – as I've been in another world for most of my career its really exciting when I dig into a total masters career and take inspiration from it as I am at the moment with Laurent Garnier.

Eats Everything - no explanation required.

Bicep & Simian Mobile Disco – most likely I'll be out in the crowd raving when the guys are on so yeah, I'm excited about that.
