6 Songs You Need to Hear This Week

Danny Brown - When It Rain

"When It Rain" is the first we've heard from the Danny Brown since 2013's Old, but the Detroit rapper is as breathless and hyper than ever. It may be difficult to decipher exactly the words, yet you know exactly what he's saying. His raspy voice and rapid-fire delivery overflow with unparalleled confidence, as if that's all it takes to survive.

Portishead - SOS (Abba cover)
The British trip-hop group's first new song since 2009 is somehow both unexpected and inevitable. Unexpected because it's a cover of "SOS" one of Abba's sugariest songs, and inevitable because it transforms the song into a somber ballad that squarely fits in with the rest of their discography. It's a drastic transformation, made all the more haunting by the accompanying music video which ends with a quote from slain politician Jo Cox.

Nice As Fuck - Door
This Jenny Lewis-fronted supergroup released their first track "Door" earlier this week, as a preview of their surprise album drop mere days later. And while it features Au Revoir Simone's Erika Foster and The Like's Tennessee Thomas, it's undeniably a trademark Lewis track. It's got her signature honied vocals and biting lyrics, yet with its chugging baseline and percussive beat it's way spikier than her solo stuff. In other words, it's got just as much sugar and spice as the band's name suggest.

G.L.O.S.S. - We Live
In age of transphobic bathroom laws and appalling nightclub shootings, Olympia hardcore band G.L.O.S.S. sound more than vital. They sound necessary. When Sadie Switchblade screams "We live/For nights like this/Basements packed with burning kids/We scream/Just to make sense of things/Studs and leather/Survivors' wings" it's a battlecry for marginalized communities everywhere. When simply existing is a political act, sometimes you need to shout to be heard.

Phantogram - You Don't Get Me High Anymore
The electro-rock duo comprised of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel have been busy since the release of their 2014 album Voices, playing festival stages and collaborating with Big Boi. But now they're back with a new tune that might just be the poppies track they've ever released. "You Don't Get Me High Anymore" simmers with its uptempo synths, drum-machine beats and literally addictive lyrics, making it one of the best summer listens we've heard in awhile.

Astronomyy - Into You (Ariana Grande cover)
Maybe you're into Ariana Grande's ubiquitous hit "Into You" but wish it was just a little chiller and a lot more sinister. Than British electronic artist Astronomyy's cover is for you. It's an eerie R&B take on a a modern radio mainstay that's just a catchy, albeit creepier than the original.
